Father's Day Blog Hop

This Father's Day is going to be very different in our home as a month ago my husband's father, my father-in-law, and the boys' Grandaddy Smitherman died at the young age of 65. It was unexpected, and there is definitely a hole in our hearts as we cope with our loss. We honored Jackie at his memorial service with a slideshow, and seeing people's reactions to all of the photos of him at a younger age was priceless. Pictures are powerful and they tell a story of who you are and what you have loved, and they help connect us to the past in happy times and in sad. I was so grateful that as the historian in the family I was able to quickly access all of our precious photographs so that my husband, Chris Smitherman, could put together a beautiful slideshow for his father.

Priceless memories

With these memories fresh, I found it hard to focus on Jackie at this time - instead I am highlighting Chris and the many ways he is a good father and husband himself, just like his own Dad. He deserves more than a Lowe's gift card this year - he has taken on a great deal of additional responsibility with his mother, sister and nieces now that his father has gone, yet he still provides for his own family. I want him to know how much we appreciate him, and to honor what he does for us on a day to day basis! With a busy few weeks ahead, I needed some simple projects that I could knock out in a short amount of time. It doesn't take much to give someone a gift from the heart when you have the right tools and a few printed photographs! I am going to show you a few gift ideas you can pull together before the big day using some of Creative Memories' latest products.

Telling someone you love them as a husband and as a Dad with pictures is easy if you just set aside a few moments to do it

Commemorate a Special Time Together
Before Chris was a father, he was a husband, and while we try to make time for ourselves, it is pretty difficult without formal "date nights." This page layout commemorates one of my favorite trips we took this year - I used the wood grain paper from the "Hello Baby Boy" paper pack, as well as Creative Memories' brown cardstock for mats and decorative touches. The wood grain paper looks perfect with the rustic seafood restaurant as a backdrop - I can never get enough of it! I cannot wait to show my husband these pages.
I love the way this turned out! The wood grain paper from Creative Memories' Hello Baby Boy paper pack and brown cardstock are perfect for a masculine page for a special man in your life!

With the wood grain paper from Creative Memories' Hello Baby Boy paper pack it is easy to make a masculine page to highlight a favorite father in your life! I threw in some Brown cardstock for mats and decorative touches and journaled right on the pages as well as in a journaling box created with the Hello Baby Boy Slide In Pack and some numbers from the Year in Review sticker set.

Not one to waste any space, I journaled everywhere! Stories are so important

The band's logo is actually a photo we took of the screen before the show started - take pictures of signs and logos, they make your pages work so much better! :)

Help Him Celebrate His Children Everywhere He Goes
Now that the school year is over, are you left with stacks of professional photos (school, soccer, basketball, dance, etc...) and nothing to do with them? Don't just put them in a box- cut them up and put them in a little mini album for yourself and for others! Creative Memories is selling these cute little 2X3 Navy Pocket Albums with pages for just $7 and I have always found them to be great gifts for parents and grandparents. I went and looked on Chris' desk and he has the loose photos standing up against his computer monitor - his other mini albums are full already, so I am going to surprise him with this little gem for the newer photos!

Professional photos everywhere?

Fast, easy gift for a Dad

Encourage Him to Tell His Own Story!
Another quick gift is a Fast2Fabulous album. I have talked about these in my blog before, but if you still haven't had the chance to check them out I would definitely do so. I have created some quick pages capturing Chris as a husband and a Dad using the "Stitch in Twine" album pages. Seeing how simple it was to do so, it made me think that a gift of a Fast2Fabulous album, a pen and a tape runner (maybe with a stack of photos) would be an excellent gift for any man this Father's Day. Photos are universal and while men (or busy folks for that matter!) may not care about using elaborate techniques to create pages, they do care about their photos. Why wouldn't they want the best for their memories? Put a pen in their hands and let them tell their own stories!

Scrapping Smarter in 2016

As the year comes to a close and I think back to what I did and did not accomplish with my photo projects in 2015, I am left with a desire to do even better in 2016! I completed a great number of pages and kept up with my weekly picture uploads, and I was very good about hosting retreats and workshops with fellow scrapbookers. Nevertheless, I fell short of my expectations in terms of journaling. As the days rush by and more and more events take place, the little details are slipping away. I have calendars and journals but the busier my life gets the less time I have to record long entries (and even when I do that I know I will have to re-copy all of those thoughts into a scrapbook with the matching photos.) So I have a plan for a better strategy in 2016!

Slide In Packs!

I want to have journaling cards with me at all times so I can use my “fringe moments” to record stories all year long. This is a bigger step in pushing my album projects forward than writing in a journal because instead of having to write it once, then transfer those words to a scrapbook when you get to those pictures, the cards are already done and ready to put in your album. The CM Group’s Slide-In Packs are perfect for my plans!

They come in a variety of color schemes and themes, and depending on what event you are journaling about, you are sure to find something that will work for your pages.

I plan to keep these and a few CM pens in my purse all year long – what a big weight off of my mind to know that even if the photos aren't ready to go in a book yet, the stories will be!

Planners and Pre-Made Pages

I also have lots of other "pre-scrapping" plans for 2016! It is not that difficult to dedicate some time each weekend to working on having  some pre-made pages, borders, and cards ready to go so my scrapbooking pages can go by faster. This will take some planning and some awareness of what the year has in store.

Even in this digital world, I am still a big "paper planner" fan. There is something to be said for holding a calendar in your hand and seeing it all mapped out in front of you. I dream a lot and tend to plan vacations a year in advance, so at the beginning of the year I already know where I am going and when all year. For this reason I can completely get a head start on pre-made pages. For example, I know that in 2016 I will celebrate my 10th wedding anniversary with my husband in New England, and for the first time the family will go to Disney World for the Christmas festivities, so I just knocked out a few pages in advance:

I could go on and on - I know about a baby shower for my cousin in March, my mother's 70th birthday party, and a family beach trip in June. Nothing can stop me from going ahead and predesigning these pages or making fun borders to match. I am sure this resonates with any of you who know that you are going to a special vacation spot, who knows they have a baby on the way, who knows their daughter is getting married, who knows they are going to do a house remodel, etc... Could you picture "pres-scrapping" any of these events?

To add icing to the cake, CM has just made it really easy for us with a brand new "Year to Remember "collection. It is perfect for those of us who are planners at heart. The Year to Remember collection includes a 12x12 Paper Pack $9.50 (12 sheets total including designer papers plus six calendar grids), Stickers (3 pk) $8 and Embellishments $8. The Monthly Stickers (1 pk) will be available mid-January for $2.50. This is for January to June - later in the year they will have the July through December embellishments -I cannot wait to see what they will look like. I love how CM is continuously refreshing the product line and keeping things fresh and fun for those of us who love our scrapbooks!

Journaling: The Power of the Pen

"If stories come to you, care for them. And learn to give them away where they are needed. Sometimes a person needs a story more than food to stay alive." Barry Lopez

Our pictures alone often only tell part of the story, and sometimes it's the tiny details that  aren't apparent from the image that will truly bring the memories to life. Journaling can often be the hardest thing to do when making albums, but it is a critical part of page completion  and one that should not be neglected. At the end of the day, it will be the stories and the photos that mean so much to you, not the embellishments and the paper choices you make, so try to at the very least include the who, what, when, where and why on your pages. These are often hard to remember as time passes which is why album making should be a part of your regular weekly regimen (just like exercise or grocery shopping), but if you can't make that work, keeping a journal is another good way to jot down things you worry will slip away. I often find myself accessing my journal to scrapbook because it's the tiny details that can get lost in the days and months that follow!

When making traditional scrapbook albums, I can think of several ways we can add journaling to our pages. I am sure there are many more, but I will talk about the following today:

1.) Titles made with bold tipped pens or ABC sticker letters
2.) Your own handwriting in caption form right on the page
3.) The creation of plain or decorative ruled journal boxes
4.) Full page spreads with nothing but your writing
5. )Print-outs of email messages or Facebook posts
6.) Detailed invitations or photos of venue/event signs

Titles
Let's start with the basics - the title of the page itself. Your handwriting in a bold pen is the easiest way to title a page, but you can also make it a bit more decorative using ABC letters or machine-cut letters on cardstock.

Your Own Handwriting on the Page
You don't need a formal journal box if you don't want one - feel free to write right there on your page. That is what is so great about the CM Group's white, spargo and natural refill pages. They provide a blank surface that you can use however you like to tell your story, and sometimes the easiest thing to do is to simply allow some room on your page to write around your photos themselves. At times I draw ruled lines to keep my handwriting in check, and other times I get creative and snip pieces of cardstock to make decorative shapes to journal on. I always make sure to only use the CM Group's acid-free and bleed resistant pens in my albums.

Journal Boxes
Placing journal boxes next to photos is a favorite method of mine. Some scrapbooking kits come with these or you can make your own using colored paper or cardstock. If your journal space is dark then  metallic silver or gold pens will be the best way to highlight your words.

Full Page Spreads of Writing
Quick captions are the most popular way to journal but sometimes you have a lot to say so a scrapbook page itself might be nothing but your own words. This type of page is pretty rare so don't be intimidated by it - you never know when you might need to do it yourself, however!

Typed Messages
Sometimes you've already told the story in print somewhere (perhaps in an email, on Facebook, or a blog post.) While your own handwriting is the preferred method of journaling as people who love you will love to see it, don't hesitate at times to print those pre-written words out and place them right there on the page! On other occasions I have incorporated page prints created digitally in my traditional albums for a sharp look.

Detailed invitations or photos of venue/event signs

Bring home the menu, save the invitation and take photos of venue signs if you want to be able to share the specifics of a certain event!

There are so many wonderful reasons to journal and so many ways to do it - can you think of any I haven't included here? Please feel free to share your ideas in the comments and as always, keep scrappin'! Fran
